How to email customers who abandon their cart on Shopify?

Many visitors fill their cart, start checkout, then leave. Shopify keeps these abandoned checkouts and can automatically send an email with a link that brings the customer back to their cart, with no paid app.

Step by step

Button names come from the original guide (Shopify in French, Leadpages in English). In your account, buttons appear in your language.

  1. 1

    Open the abandoned checkouts list

In your Shopify admin, click « Orders », then « Abandoned checkouts ». You see every customer who entered their email at checkout without completing the order, with what was in their cart.

The email status column shows whether a reminder has been sent, and the recovery status shows whether the customer bought in the end.

  2. 2

    Turn on the automatic email

Go to « Apps » > « Messaging », then « Automations ». On Shopify's abandoned checkout automation, click « Show actions » > « Edit settings » and select sending abandoned checkout emails automatically.

  3. 3

Choose who gets the email and when

In « Send to », choose who receives it: only customers subscribed to your marketing emails, or everyone who abandoned checkout. In « Send after », choose the delay (for example 1 hour, 6 hours, 10 hours or 24 hours).

A short delay (a few hours) reaches customers while they are still thinking about the purchase. Save.

  4. 4

    Customize the message

Open the email template to add your logo, your colors and text that sounds like you. Keep one clear button back to the cart: that is what brings the customer back.

To give a nudge, you can add a discount code to the text, but not every time: otherwise customers learn to abandon on purpose.

  5. 5

Follow up by hand on big carts

For an important cart, open it in « Abandoned checkouts » and send the recovery email yourself from the checkout page. You can add a personal note or answer a shipping question.

  6. 6

Measure what the reminders bring in

Check « Abandoned checkouts » every week: the recovery status shows which carts turned into orders. If few customers come back, try another delay or a clearer subject line before adding a discount.

Common mistakes

  • Emailing everyone without checking the rules where you sell: some countries require consent before a marketing email. If in doubt, keep « subscribed to marketing ».
  • Putting a discount in every reminder: customers start waiting for the email before they buy.
  • Not testing: place an order yourself up to checkout with your email, leave, and check that the email arrives and the link reopens the cart.
