How to sell gift cards on Shopify?
A gift card is the perfect last-minute present, and it often brings a new customer to your store. On Shopify it's a separate product: the customer picks an amount, pays, and gets a code by email.
The essentials in 30 seconds
- Open gift cards
- Add a title, description and image
- Set the amounts
- Save and check availability
- Test the purchase and the email
- Track used cards
Avoid: Setting an expiration date without checking the rules: in the US, federal law and many states limit gift card expiration.

- 1
Open gift cards
In your Shopify admin, click « Products », then « Gift cards », then « Add a gift card product ».
- 2
Add a title, description and image
For example « Glow Candles gift card ». In the description, say how it's used (online, valid store-wide). Add a clear image of the card: it's what customers see in your store.
- 3
Set the amounts
Shopify suggests default amounts (« denominations »). Replace them with yours, for example 20, 50 and 100, add more with « Add denomination » or delete with the trash icon. Customers can't type a custom amount: they choose from these.
- 4
Save and check availability
Click « Save gift card product ». Make sure it's available on the Online Store, then add it to a collection or the menu (for example « Gift ideas »).
- 5
Test the purchase and the email
Place a test order: the customer gets an email with the card code to use at checkout. Review that message in your notification settings and adjust the text if needed.
- 6
Track used cards
Under « Products » > « Gift cards », you see every card sold, its balance and any expiration date. You can also issue a card by hand to make things right with a customer.
Try it yourself
Shopify starts free, then has a discounted launch offer. You can set everything up before paying.
Try Shopify ↗Affiliate link: it does not change the price for you.
Common mistakes
- Setting an expiration date without checking the rules: in the US, federal law and many states limit gift card expiration.
- Not featuring it: buried in the catalog, it won't sell. Show it in December and before holidays.
- Not testing the email: a poorly presented code makes customers think the card never arrived.
