How to sell on Instagram with Shopify?

Instagram is often the first source of visitors for a new store. With Meta's official app for Shopify, your products go into a catalog you can tag in your posts. Until then, a good link in bio is already enough to sell.

Step by step

Screenshots show the interface used in the original guide (Shopify in French, Leadpages in English). In your account, buttons appear in your language.

  1. 1

Switch your Instagram account to a professional account

In the Instagram app, open your account settings and switch to a professional account (« Business » or « Creator »). Connect it to a Facebook Page: Meta needs it for the product catalog.

  2. 2

Install the Facebook & Instagram app

In the Shopify admin, open the Shopify App Store and search for « Facebook & Instagram », published by Meta. Install it: it is added as a free sales channel.

  3. 3

    Connect your Meta accounts

In the Facebook & Instagram channel, follow the setup: your Facebook account, your Meta Business account (Business Manager), your Facebook Page and your Instagram professional account. Accept the terms, then start the catalog sync.

  4. 4

    Check your product pages

Only active products with a photo, a price and a description sync correctly to the catalog. Choose in the app which products to share: start with your best sellers rather than the whole catalog.

  5. 5

Tag your products in your posts

Once Meta has approved your account (this can take a few days), you can tag your products in posts and stories, just like tagging a person. Tapping the tag shows the price and leads to the product page. Some shopping features depend on your country: the app shows what is available to you.

  6. 6

Keep a link in bio that sells

While you wait for approval, or on top of it: put a single link in your bio to a page with your store, your current offer and your email sign-up. Add UTM parameters to this link to see in Google Analytics what Instagram brings you.

Try it yourself

Common mistakes

  • Sharing the whole catalog at once with incomplete product pages: products without a photo or a price are rejected.
  • Relying only on product tags: they depend on Meta's approval and your country. A link in bio works right away.
  • Sending Instagram visitors to your home page: a direct link to the product or a dedicated page converts better.
