How to create a product collection on Shopify?
A collection is an aisle in your store: « Candles », « New arrivals », « Sale ». It helps customers find what they want and lets you feature products in the menu or on the home page.
The essentials in 30 seconds
- Open collections
- Add a title and description
- Choose manual or automated
- Add products and set the order
- Check availability and save
- Add it to the menu
Avoid: One collection per product: too many near-empty aisles lose the customer. Aim for 3 to 6 well-stocked collections.

- 1
Open collections
In your Shopify admin, click « Products », then « Collections », then « Create collection ».
- 2
Add a title and description
The title shows on your store: keep it short and clear (« Scented candles »). Add a one-line description and an image: they appear at the top of the collection page and help Google understand it.
- 3
Choose manual or automated
« Manual »: you add each product yourself, great for a small selection (« Staff picks »). « Automated »: you set conditions (for example product type is « Candle », or tag contains « sale ») and Shopify adds matching products on its own, including new ones.
- 4
Add products and set the order
For a manual collection, search and add products. For an automated one, check the resulting list. Then pick the sort order: best selling, price, newest, or manual.
- 5
Check availability and save
Under « Sales channels » (or « Availability »), make sure the collection is available on the Online Store. Click « Save ».
- 6
Add it to the menu
Go to « Online Store » > « Navigation » (or « Menus »), open the main menu and add a link to the collection. It now shows in your store navigation.
Try it yourself
Shopify starts free, then has a discounted launch offer. You can set everything up before paying.
Try Shopify ↗Affiliate link: it does not change the price for you.
Common mistakes
- One collection per product: too many near-empty aisles lose the customer. Aim for 3 to 6 well-stocked collections.
- An automated collection with conditions that are too broad: unrelated products slip in. Check the list after adding products.
- Forgetting to add it to the menu: nobody finds it.
